American Households Are Divided Over How to Load the Dishwasher One of the most divisive appliances keeps sparking consternation in the U.S. and abroad. Even Britain’s prime minister enters the fray. Nina and Stephen Edwards have been on the same page for most things in their 25-year marriage: what to have for dinner, where to vacation, where to set the thermostat in their New York City home. But there is one thing they can’t agree on: how best to load the dishwasher. Nina, an illustrator and adjunct lecturer at Pratt Institute, has a more freewheeling approach. Just make sure everything fits.“It might look random and messy,” she says.“But I know where it all is.” Stephen, a professor of computer science at Columbia University, has a plan. “I make a mental map of how the water moves around the dishwasher before I put the dishes in,” he explains.“If we’re going to wash it, we should make sure it’s as clean as it can be.” It’s the household conundrum that keeps giving us loads of headaches. To pre-rinse or not to pre-rinse? Is playing Tetris with your dishes the superior loading technique? Which side should the cutlery face? The global debate recently swirled anew after remarks from British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. In an interview with fashion magazine Grazia, he and his wife, Akshata Murty, were asked who was better at loading the dishwasher. www.wsj.com/lifestyle/how-to-load-the-dishwasher-debate-households-b4225e3c?mod=hp_featst_pos5

I don't own a dishwasher. I used to have one years ago when I lived in an apartment, but hardly ever used it, The loading of it seemed easy enough to me though..

First World problems. LOL! I could go post about politics? Relax. I was amused, hence the LOL. It was not a personal indictment.

Well that's just it. If you have a large family, then it makes sense to have one I reckon.
But for a couple of dishes here and there, it's quicker just to wash them in the sink.

Agreed. The last apartment Joe and I had barely had a kitchen, let alone a dishwasher.

I load it the way my wife said to. There are just 2 of us usually so it mostly stores dirty dishes until we run it. At least every other day.

We live in a 1938 log cabin that's been remodeled but we are still 952 sq ft so we are limited with space so I just hand wash everything..we also have a 1500 sq ft garage building with a mother in law suite and it has 1 in it but not sure how they load it.

A lot of things don't clean that well in the dishwasher. A lot of things are hand washed. The only things that we put in the dishwasher are glasses, the correlle, plain glass pyrex storage bowls and utensils. Literally everything else gets hand washed. I don't like putting my good knives in the dishwasher. Pots and pans really don't come clean. My bread pans, etc I hand wash. And I hand wash spatulas and tongs and all that stuff
