I actually prefer the Bananarama version to the Supremes! (One of the few instances whereon a cover sounds better than the original) I will give you a few songs where I think the cover was better than the original. One is "Handy Man" by James Taylor and another is "Your Love Has Lifted Me Higher" by Rita Coolidge. I would also say Rita Coolidge did a lot better job on "We're All Alone" than the original by the writer Boz Skaggs, although the Boz Skaggs version never made the Top 40. I really like Boz Skaggs as an artist, but that song didn't fit him. There is "Muskrat Love" by the Captain and Tennille who had a better version than America. I like their version of "Shop Around" better than the original too, but that is debatable. Most probably never heard the original, but the Barry Manilow classic "Mandy" was originally recorded as "Brandy" by a lesser-known artist, and the original version did chart on the Hot 100 but didn't reach the Top 40. Here is one. Blue Suede's version of "Hooked On A Feeling" is much better to me than the original by B.J. Thomas. They just had a great arrangement. The topic of cover songs could be a thread of it's own. |
