I ran my 4th "Furnace 5K" race on Friday August 20th, it's one of my favorite races. They changed the course a bit this year, I like the new course better.
Had a ton of fun, about 300-400 runners ran it, when the gun went off everyone took off like a rocket- adrenalin rush no doubt, I took off faster than I wanted to at a higher pace, and everyone was passing me, then just as I figured at the 2 kilometer marker I was passing them, they ran too hard and burned out, it was around 34*C at race time.
The idea is to start off at a more easy pace and slowly increase your speed during the race running your fastest during the last kilometer to the finish line. Then give it all ya got a few meters before you cross the finish line even if you go into Oxygen debt, there will be plenty of time to catch your breath after you cross that finish line. The last 300 meters or so there were 5 runners about 6 meters ahead of me I was hoping to pass them before the finish line, I gained on them but wasn't able to pass them I was already going pretty hard and they were younger runners.
I bumped up my pace from what I did while training on the LaFortune jogging trail, and that plan worked good, looking at my stop watch I knew where I was in the race and how much farther it is to the finish line.
I came in 2nd place for my age group and won a glass tumbler I would of rather got a medal instead.

After the race they had hamburgers & hotdogs this year, and they always serve beer for reason but I don't drink. They had tons of soft drinks and water. I had to stick around to collect my prize, they started to pass out the awards at 8:30pm.
They raised the price to $40.00 this year it was $35.00 in 2019 the race was scrubbed for 2020.
Anyhow the race was a blast.

$40.00 for a race is alot of money and a 5K is short & quick, you get more for your money in a longer race such as a 10K or 15K they cost the same as a 5K. However almost all race events are 5K events.. The half marathons & full marathons cost more.
Dallas Texas runs the "Hotter than Hell" half marathon in late August it was $85.00 a few years ago- must be more by now.

Lots of great photos there. Are you in them, SK? I imagine so. I do remember seeing pics of you in various races and dunks before.

I dunno where the money goes the race is not a fund raising event, guess the loot goes to buy the medals, Tee-shirts, refreshments, pay the workers and the cost of operating the equipment. It's a ton of fun I have not raced in over a year. Early sign ups paid $30.00 but on race day it's $40.00 (was $35.00 last year-2019) We run with computer chips and I never knew this but they have tracking stations set up along the race course, so they can tell where each runner is at a given time, mostly for emergencies I guess should a runner collapse they know where he's at- also I guess they could tell if you cheat, or cross over before the turn-around point- because you would not of cleared the other tracking stations. We had one refreshment station in the race and that was located at the turn-around point. The whole race was run on the Riverside jogging trail it was a out & back course.

Hey I found myself on page 4 at the starting coral, in the middle picture behind the guy in the gray shirt and the guy in the blue shorts.
Normally the fastest runners go to the front at the starting line, I like to be near the front so I won't have to pass a bunch of slower runners at the start of the race, every second counts in a race. I'm the guy with the mop head. The first pages are before the race starts.

I found myself in another picture at the starting coral picture #5 on page 4 where the guy in the blue shorts is turned around, I have a big smile on my face- this must of been about 5 minutes before gun time. The guy with the 225 Bib number was the overall first place winner he ran a time of 19:57, and the girl in the white top and black shorts was the first place overall female winner with a time of 20:05 so she was on his tail the whole race, those two runners must of really battled it out. She was only 7 seconds behind but in a race every second counts. The overall first place prize was something in a case I dunno what they won. Everyone else who won a spot in their age groups got a glass tumbler with the "Furnace 5K" logo on it. I came in 2nd place in my age group out of 8 runners. It really felt great to be running races again, there were no racing events in 2020. The race fee to enter was $40.00 on race day or sign up 30 days early and pay $30.00.
I don't like to sign up early because if something happens and you can't make it there are no refunds, I like to sign up race day even it's more expensive.

Found myself in another picture page 4 picture #10 as the gun goes off my head is in front of that background tree. The runners are checking their watches & time. A 5K is a fast paced race.

Lots of great photos there. Are you in them, SK? I imagine so. I do remember seeing pics of you in various races and dunks before. I found myself in quite a few pictures at the starting line in the background. This race is my favorite and hot weather races are hard to find, most races are in the morning at 8:am when it's cold. I like to run when it's a toasty 38*C and dumping off gallons of sweat, some runners can't handle the heat well without training in it. I did the Polar Bear Plunge 4 years in a row, I enjoy doing racing and things like the Polar Bear Plunge to test my tuffness and to cross things off my "bucket list". The Polar Bear Plunge is a good bucket list item for everyone to try.
