WNBA rule meant for fair play doesn't work- Seattle falls to Phoenix The Seattle Storm fell to Phoenix in a hard fought game 69-64 at Climate Pledge Arena on Saturday, a contest where Jewell Loyd turned in an incredible effort with 26 points. With the loss the Storm falls to 1-3, a tough start, but not nearly time to panic. On this one? Fans are more angry, not at their team or the opponent. But the WNBA itself. You see, the Storm played without perhaps the best player in the league Breanna Stewart and guard Epiphanny Prince. Both players are in the league's "health and safety protocols" in relation to COVID-19. As we've seen across the country over the last 27 months it can happen to anyone. But then came this tweet from Breanna Stewart. Stewart is eluding to the fact that she is in protocols because of a flight---a commercial flight---the team needs to travel. For background, most professional sports teams use charter or private flights, mostly for ease of travel but in this pandemic age it's an extra measure to keep players safe. The WNBA doesn't allow its teams to do so. That doesn't mean the teams don't want to foot the bill, in fact the New York Liberty went ahead and did it to help their players in the pandemic last year. komonews.com/sports/storm/wnba-rule-meant-for-fair-play-doesnt-work-seattle-falls-to-phoenix

This is "equity vs equality". The "equality" is on the basketball floor. They show up and play the game by the same rules. Yes, some team owners have more money and can provide charter flights or more perks for the team. Where should that end? Perhaps they should all only eat the same exact meals? Someone could get an advantage getting better food. Do they control the amount of practice time? What if one coach wants to have more practices than another? Oh gee, not "fair".
