As you all probably know I am a soccer fan and run my own team (San Telmo Serpientes) in hattrick. Good news: San Telmo Serpientes made it first in the 9th league this season and became directly promoted to the 8th League (which will be hard to win, there is one much better than my team, initially we start out 8th): www.hattrick.org/Club/?TeamID=493130Now, the U20 WC will be organized and start in a few weeks, as neither Spain nor Germany are presenting candidatures to run the event, I am open to suggestions, see the posted poll: Every nation has gones some lenght to present their canidature, chose for me, I will transmit the vote that comes from the poll at the top of this thread (and myself will abstain though I am torn betwen USA and INDIA). EDIT: Oops I see the board truncates the options, here the presentations again, so you can vote: USA: u20usa.wordpress.com/Slovenia: www.slovenijau20wc.tk/Slovakia: slovakiaforu20wc.hattrick.eu.sk/home/Poland: u20poland.pl/index.php?lang=enThe Maldives: www.hattrickdhivehiraajje.webs.com/India: www.hattrickindia.webs.com/Guatemala: guatemalau20.ociocreador.net/index.php?lang=enFrance: htfrance.net/worldcup/Bosnia+Herzegowina: u20wcbih.tk/Rattler

Oh well done with your team, Rattler. You must be a good coach. India plays soccer? I had no idea. Well, I'm all for the underdog, so yes I'll vote for them or anyone else who hasn't won before.

I like their Mascot hattrickindia.webs.com/ourmascot.htmTheir bid promo vid, though...?(the US vid I like much better, check it in the US link) My team indeed did well: 20 (competitive) matches undefeated, only one draw, the rest were wins. But then, this was only 9th league... Rattler

I don't know much about soccer either. Like that video though.
Rattler, can you please explain a bit more about the leagues. I know that first league are the major big teams, ones that go for the European and world cups, but how do they work themselves up the leagues?

Rattler, can you please explain a bit more about the leagues. I know that first league are the major big teams, ones that go for the European and world cups, but how do they work themselves up the leagues? It is different in the US and the rest of the world: In the US, a team runs no risk apart from losing face or gains nothing apart from gaining fame for winning or losing a league, as they are actually either "companies" in the econnomical sense or university teams and can neither ascend nor descend...(my take is that because there is no risk nor gain soccer in the US ewill never get "hot") In the rest of the world that is handled completely differntly: There are the lower (non-professional, a.k.a. amateur) leagues, and after a certain level they become professional (4th league here in Spain, e.g.). Have a look at this picture and the legend below, and you can see that (the example is the 2nd league in Spain) the two that reach the first two places will be promoted automatically (i.e. ascend to the first league with all the options, extra millions of income and more obligations), places 3-6 play off the third team to ascend to first league, and the last 4 will descend to third league (the vacant places being filled up by the descendants from first and the ascendants from third in this example). That is the way it works: If you are within the last after 38 matches, you will descend. If you are within the first three, you will ascend. For the first leagues of every nation (as there is no other league to go up to), the top players go international: Deoending on the overall status of the nations soccer they will either play Champions league (which means a guaranteed 30 million $ per team or more if you proceed to quarters, Spain as the wold best nation atm sends 4 initially), places 5 and 6 (and third team of each Champions league team before quarters) play UEFA cup, the European club championship, a k.o. competition. For us that is what makes it so exciting (and what makes us not take US soccer seriously): Here it is a true gamble that can decide about the future of your club (and not just a fake thing to make money, without any consequences whther you do good or bad): Mallorca, where I live, e.g. became 5th last year and should play UEFA (and we have the water upper border lower lip with 60 Millions debts), but UEFA killed in the office what was won on the grass, supposedly because our club president had dared last year to challenge Spanish Soccer Federation President Villar in elections (but withdraw after massive threats from the mafia). Officially they stated our debt is against the rules, but the team that replaced us (last years 6th, Villareal) has even more debts (UEFA rules are *outside of judgement of the normal juridical system* by definition and agreement of all European governments, so you cannot even demand them!!!) So, even if you win on the grass it is not always clear what will be going to happen in reality (though in 99.9% of the cases it is previsible and proceed according to the rules described above). As far as my club is concerned, you can see the same picture here: eu.hattrick.org/World/Series/Default.aspx?LeagueLevelUnitID=60695&TeamID=493130As you can see we - zero mathces played yet, season starts on AUG 14 - occupy place 8 (of 8) in the 9th league, as we just ascended (as first of the 10th), and the lines make the cut: First two ascend to the 8th league, last two descend back to 10th (oh, and should you wonder about the language, it is "Basque", a language here in Spain only the Basques, and maybe Finnish and Hungarians can understand (I hear they are of the same language family) so dont worry if you dont have any clue of what the sentences mean, neither have I. For some strange reason my club - Sant Elm Serpientes - came up in Basque in google... The only thing that is clear is that quite obviously "League" translates to "Multzoa" in Basque, as well as "Match" to "Jok" and "Player" to "Jokalari"... ). EDIT: Found the same setup with my club in English! hattrick.org/World/Series/Default.aspx?LeagueLevelUnitID=60695&TeamID=493130 (interesting to compare to the Basque, no?) Does this help? Feel free to shoot more questions for clarification. Rattler

It's at times like this when I wish I knew something about soccer. I can't even begin to discuss it. A short two weeks holiday here in my house and environment (during league season, of causes) will cure this defect immidiately.;D Feel invited, Rattler

Thanks for the the really clear explanation, Rattler. I get it now. I actually didn't know there were so many leagues. I have heard of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd, but that was about it.
What with millions of dollars/euros at stake, no wonder this is all taken so seriously.
