Law Will Install Kill Switches In All New Cars Once again, drivers get screwed by politicians in DC… Back in 1998, sci-fi TV series The X-Files aired an episode called “Kill Switch” about an AI gone rogue. Told when the internet was still accessed by most using dial-up modems, it was a fascinating tale of technology run amuck, a message about not handing too much of your life over to the digital world. While it might also seem like a sci-fi tale, soon enough the United States federal government could force automakers to install kill switches authorities can access and use to shut down any newer vehicle. To many, that might sound like a wonderful idea. After all, we’ve seen wanted criminals who have fled from police only to crash into a car with a family inside, killing innocents as they try to avoid capture. Being able to stop the pursuit early and almost instantaneously seems like a wonderful thing, a potential lifesaver any law-abiding citizen would enthusiastically embrace. According to an article written by former U.S. Representative Bob Barr, hidden away in the recently passed infrastructure bill, the very one I warned before would negatively impact drivers across the country if it were to pass, is a measure to install vehicle kill switches into every new car, truck, and SUV sold in this country. The regulation likely won’t be enforced for five years, so maybe there’s time to do something about this. As we’ve seen both in this country and others recently, what constitutes “law-abiding” can change drastically overnight. For example, in September a car was pulled over in New Zealand and the occupants arrested when police discovered the trunk was full of Kentucky Fried Chicken meals. They were smuggling the fast food to customers in locked-down Auckland, against quarantine measures. Yet not too long before, delivering restaurant orders to people was considered a reputable, legal activity.SE It gets even better: Barr points out that the bill, which has been signed into law by President Biden, states that the kill switch, which is referred to as a safety device, must “passively monitor the performance of a driver of a motor vehicle to accurately identify whether that driver may be impaired.” In other words, Big Brother will constantly be monitoring how you drive. If you do something the system has been programmed to recognize as driver impairment, your car could just shut off, which could be incredibly dangerous. There is the possibility the kill switch program might measure your driving as impaired, then when you try to start the car up again the engine won’t fire up. That would potentially leave you stranded. But wait, there’s more. This kill switch “safety” system would be open, or in other words there would be a backdoor. That would allow police or other government authorities to access it whenever. Would they need a warrant to do that? Likely not. Even better, hackers could access the backdoor and shut down your vehicle. autos.yahoo.com/law-install-kill-switches-cars-170000930.html

The US is headed toward complete collapse...Just seems like people have given up and are accepting the loss of their freedoms...
I knew things would change after 9/11 but when you add Covid to the mix it just seems like citizens have given up and I don't understand it because other countries have seem to come out the other side stronger and more organized...

Not to sure about Australia I remember reading a few years back that they took things to extremes...Was thinking along the lines of some of the Polynesian and Scandinavian countries...Even some of the neighboring countries didn't fall apart and I was expecting them to...

Ok because this country is more divided than it has ever been. Trump, Biden have both spewed hate to the other side and Congress is no better. Gone are the days when Congress worked together to do things. Gone are the days when President's actually cared about the American people. Now? They care about their poll numbers and how much money they can make on the side. We are basically screwed.

Do you think it is at all possible that this divide has been made even greater by the influence of other countries that enjoy the destruction of the Capitalist dream? Do you think that perhaps Americans are easy prey for fake news and outside instigation? After all a divided country is a weak country.

I think a large part of it comes from lack of education and faulty parenting...jmo Also agree that outside influence from other countries did not help the situation... As for a divided country being a weaker country, I recently read a book, can't remember name, that had a couple chapters in it regarding how easy it would have been for a foreign country to take over the US immediately after the Civil War, so yes I think the US is ripe for the picking...

Was thinking more along the lines of the countries who were honest with their citizens and did what was best for them... Like who? Any country I bring up you are going to be able to find stories about on the net regarding unrest during the height of Covid so I will just say the ones I think and then you can post all the articles you want...New Zealand, Sweden, Norway, Spain and even Costa Rica... I am not bashing the US I am just saying I don't think the government and citizens handled the virus appropriately...

Do you think that perhaps Americans are easy prey for fake news and outside instigation? After all a divided country is a weak country. In the first place the 'capitalist dream' was never more than a fantasy at best and more frequently a blatant lie. It simply allowed a lot of people to profit from the exploitation of others. As for 'divided countries' it is hard to see how in any area of life honest disagreements - call them division if you will - can be prevented from occurring unless you adopt the authoritarian/totalitarian blueprint. As those models are repellent it is inevitable that division will exist. It is not the existence of divergent views that is the problem; it is the unwillingness of some to permit free thinking and the desire to control others.
