that's the best i can come up with. food items/concepts you grew up with that have changed dramatically as you matured.
olive oil - never had that in my house as a kid, let alone knowing anything about extra virgin stuff.
will also admit to using "Parmesan" in that green can. now rarely buy any kinds of cheese already grated... not a fan of eating SAW DUST... that's literally what keeps it grated.
never had real mayo until... well, was out of HS!
always liked olives but never had a kalamata until well into adulthood.
tuna - ONLY solid packed in olive oil for me. chunk light is something my cat might turn her nose up to.
butter - real butter only, never margarine.
my dad had a great appreciation of good food. he also insisted we try different things. didn't like shrimp as a kid... have since changed m mind. wasn't wild about medium rare beef, but have com to realize that most cuts were meant to e cook to that temp.
have has your "taste" in foods change since you were a kid?

Very much so.
Like you, I never had olive oil until I started living with my husband.
I grew up eating plain, simple food. Rarely seasoned with anything but salt, pepper and garlic.
I credit my husband with expanding my culinary world. He grew up in a Portuguese household full of flavorful food. If you picture New England Boiled Dinner, that was my household.
Thank God I grew up! Now, the sky is the limit. We try all sorts of cuisines, spices, seasonings and such. My husband has said,"If you don't like something, you haven't had it prepared properly for you". I can mostly agree with that.

Springschick, there are really very few foods i just can't seem to like... liver , sardines,& oysters come to mind. my grandmother would make liver on (fortunately) rare occasions. we had to eat at least a small amount. i really wanted to like it... how could butter & onions be bad, right. my dad would take sardines in mustard in his lunch. too fishy for me. have tried again from time to time... no luck. haven't be able to find any way to like oysters... not oyster stew... now even the broth. not breaded/fried. not even raw.

We all have a food or foods we just don't like. They key is to keep trying them every now and then, as tastes change. Sounds like you get that.
Once I left my parents house, I swore that I would never eat another brussel sprout. I hated those mushy little cabbage balls! And I held true for 30 years. Then, my husband wanted some, so I found a marinade and skewered them up and roasted them on the grill. I was hesitant, but they were delicious in that balsamic marinade with the char from the grill.
