the topic of home/yard fires was discussed on radio today.
my brother had his wife call fire department on him cuz she thought the little fire he was burning to get rid of dead garden stuff was getting out of control. it wasn't... he had garden hose stretched out at the ready and never needed it. he was so embarrassed when local FD pulled into his driveway.
i called 911 after hearing a really loud, electrical crackling sound. when i got to where i thought it was coming from, all i could see was a cloud of smoke wafting outside thru screen door. 2 police cars pulled up within just a few minutes... could hear fires sirens not far behind. i had 2 big dogs at the time. they were not thrilled when what they thought was gonna be a RIDE ended up being just out to the street and away from where the firetruck ended up. a few firemen... looking like cast members from "Back Draft". they declared the outlet right next to door poorly wired (product of my EX and a neighbor) and declared it unusable until fixed. i called an electrician and he very quickly rewired the switch. then he offered to take a quick look at other outlets in that room. then he discovered the REAL problem. i had one of those portable, oil-filled space heaters. it was plugged in but no on. something (??) happened and result was a BIG black scroch mark surrounding the outlet. about 6" of the cord was dangling out of the outlet where it had burned off.
so what experiences with fire have you had?

Just a few weeks ago, the smoke alarm went off at around 2:00 - 2:30 am. We had had some Papa Murphy's Take and Bake for dinner, and one of the baking trays was still sitting on top of the glass top stove. It is very easy to turn the stovetop on if you brush against or bump into the knobs. Well, it appears that someone did just that, and one of the burners was on. It took several hours, but the tray finally got hot enough to burn, and caught fire. My son, whose room is upstairs (we live ina tri-level house), was the first one to it. My husband (we sleep in the downstairs level, kitchen is in the main level) got there right after Mike did, and took the tray out of Mike's hands and put it out in the snow. Mike was either not fully awake, mildly panicking or both.
It made for an interesting story, but no harm, no foul.

Haven't had any bad experiences with fires. I do a lot of brush and controlled burning in the springtime. Being prepared goes a long way for safety.

JMA23, gonna go a bit off into weeds on my own thread. the smell of burning leaves takes me back to childhood when that wasn't considered the end of the world. township i used to live in would make up a schedule for when they would come around and vac up leaves... that you had to pile u at the curb. same with branches that weren't too big. they would ride thru neighborhoods and vac up leaves and chip up branches... dragging the vac/chipper behind that ran the entire times. i can't help but think/wonder... which is worse for environment? burning leaves or having that truck AND vac AND chipper running, non-stop burning fossil fuel.

If you believe the AGW mantra, it's way worse for the environment to run the equipment with fossil fuels to move the leaves elsewhere. The leaves will emit the same amount of carbon into the air whether they are left to decompose or are burned. The extra carbon comes from running the equipment to process and transport the leaves to a composting area. Existing plant matter is a zero sum game when it comes to carbon.

JMA23, i was comparing which is worse... the emissions from the truck/vac/shredder engines or the smoke from the burning leaves. seems leaves might be a little less nasty... natural and all, compared to man-made from combustion engines.
