Jamaican Owner of Vacation Rental Company Says No More Black American Guests The Jamaican owner of the Rustic Mountain Living rental company shocked social media by saying she wouldn’t allow any more short-term stays. The reason? She’s fed up with the alleged misbehavior of Black American guests. In a TikTok video,“The Barefoot Mountain Lady,” said she doesn’t believe all Black Americans are ill-mannered, but most of the ones she hosted were entitled, unappreciative and generally disrespectful in her presence. She said she only ever had two mannerly Black American guests. The most eyebrow-raising statement was toward the end. The owner claimed Black Americans are spoiled and expect the same “free sh*t” in Jamaica they supposedly get at home. In the video, the woman does errands on her grounds, wades in the sea, and seems completely unbothered. https://www.tiktok.com/@rusticmountainliving/video/7235721669132832042 https://www.tiktok.com/@rusticmountainliving/video/7235799681027099946 www.yahoo.com/news/jamaican-owner-vacation-rental-company-214543898.html

That's just one perspective. It doesn't mean that every rental owner has had that experience.

Well, since that’s a black country and he specified black Americans. My guess he was tired of listening to their sh!t and putting up with their behavior issues. Some good examples of this would be cruise ships and theme parks.

I've heard similar complaints about "ugly Americans" from European people about other white people visiting their countries. We come from a land of great bounty and have certain expectations not minding the fact that other nations may not have a lot of what we take for granted. Perhaps it can be chalked up to culture clash and not race.

That is why it is always important to familiarize yourself with the customs and practices of the area you are visiting.
And being respectful is universal.

I don't think it's necessarily American black culture that makes tourists undesirable to this Jamaican hosts. Sometimes it's simply not understanding and appreciating the culture of the foreign places one visits that can cause misunderstandings and faux pas. It can happen regardless of the tourist's race. I have to agree with Springschick that people should familiarize themselves with the culture of the people when traveling abroad. And by all means, respect is key. Otherwise one runs the risk of becoming the "stereotypical ugly American."
