There are clearly things being misunderstood about portions of the Law of Moses that need to be addressed. Before I attempt to explain this, I want to point out the fact that the entire law of Moses was given by God, so to attack any part of it is to attack it's author. Moses did not come up with the laws on his own. Moses gave them the laws God gave to him. As a Christian, I am not going to think my ways are above God's. I am amazed at how professing Christians will openly attack God for anything He says or does. That is the height of arrogance.
Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it. Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people. For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for? And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day? Deuteronomy 4:5-8
This forum is a mix of people of different faiths, so I understand when non-Christians attack God's laws. I am amazed that anyone professing Christ would attack the God they say they serve for laws he wrote or things He did. I may not understand the why of everything God does, but I am not going to ever attack him for his actions. That is because I fear Him.
What kind of attacks are being made by "believers" about God's laws? Here are a few. There are attacks on the punishments for certain crimes. There are attacks because God calls behaviors an abomination. There are those mocking laws about kosher foods or the clothes they had to wear or couldn't wear. I will attempt to address these issues in this post.
First of all, the entire law of Moses applied to the nation of Israel, but not to us. The laws that are based on God's standard of holiness apply to us, because they are never changing. God hated adultery, murder, stealing, homosexuality, etc., then and still does, so we as Christians should hate those sins. We should never defend unrighteousness. Then there are laws that do not apply to us, and I shall explain why.
There are laws of separation. At the time, Israel was the only nation serving the true God, and God gave them laws that show them to be a separated people. That includes things like not wearing garments with diverse materials and kosher laws. The symbolism showed they were clean and set apart and the other nations were unclean. That changed when Jesus died and rose again beginning the New Covenant, and the gospel was taken to the gentile nations. All believers are made clean by the blood of Jesus, so the laws of separation no longer apply.
There are laws about the Levitical Priesthood that explain animal sacrifice and how it is to be done. Those were temporary laws to take us to the cross. Now we are saved by the blood of Jesus, and we don't sacrifice animals.
Finally, there were penalties. They only applied to Israel because they had the Law of Moses as their legal code. No other nation has to apply these penalties, but they can. When it comes to individual regulations, I am not going to criticize any of them because God gave them. I will defend any from slavery to polygamy to killing adulterers and witches. God gave them. They are righteous judgments.
How should a Christian view this? We should recognize that the Law of Moses is good and righteous, and we should hate what God hates and love what God loves, but we are not to go around killing people. It was never about vigilantisms. It was a legal code. I am happy to discuss anything I said and give scriptures defending my positions since I didn't reference many here. This is just an overview. If you want to discuss specifics, I am happy to do it.
