Diners Are Losing Patience With Restaurant Service—and There’s No Quick Fix


Americans are becoming fed up with lousy service while eating out.



Many restaurants face a continued drought of experienced workers and are still working to get new hires up to speed. At the same time, customers are giving restaurants less leeway than earlier in the pandemic recovery, chefs and restaurant operators say, as customers remain peeved about rising prices and pandemic-era surcharges that linger on bills.



To address the complaints, a number of restaurant companies say they are working to improve service through more hands-on training of workers and better technologies to speed up meals. At Union Square Hospitality Group, which runs New York City restaurants such as Union Square Cafe and Gramercy Tavern, the company now uses hand-held devices that allow servers to spend more time with customers and less in front of ordering systems.

I haven't noticed waiters and waitresses being any different than in times past. When a restaurant is short staffed, the service has always suffered. I have always tried to be understanding of that.

What it comes down to is the pay. They might have to increase wages to find people to take the jobs. The problem is, if prices go up anymore, only the wealthy will be able to eat out. I rarely eat out anymore. My wife and I will splurge once and a while at Red Lobster for a birthday or anniversary, but that is a luxury now. Inflation has caused us to drastically cut back.

The only problems I've seen with waiters is their attitudes. They kind of behave like airline stewardess, just the basics without any hi how are you.
