Urban progressives blast the unsafe cities that THEY created By Isaac Schorr August 13, 2023 12:30pm The capital of the most powerful and prosperous country to ever grace Earth is an unpleasant — even unlivable — place to call home. Over the past decade, Washington, DC, has transformed from a beautiful, bustling and vibrant metropolis into a city that often feels like a rip-off of Batman’s Gotham. link

D.C. is ruled by congress. And when someone makes this kind of claim, understand how bad the conservative ideas must have been for them to lose election after election. Furthermore, the most unsafe states are red and when you look at this per capita, you find a lot of small red towns are very unsafe. You should go live in downtown San Fran then. It’s lovely there I hear.

I dont know if you read the article, or perhaps only just a part of it @im2 , but DC isn't the only out of control place discussed. From coast to coast, Dem controlled strongholds have become so unsafe that those who stood with ANTIFA and BLM in calling for defunding the police and decriminalizing crimes must now eat crow. When Republicans said these progressive policies would put the public in danger they were mocked and ignored. Just like calls to protect our border were ignored. Now that deep blue "Sanctuary Citys" are finally shouldering some of the burden they had no problem forcing upon the red border states, they are panicking.
All these progressive far left policies are straining budgets to the breaking point. Out of control lawlessness created by their failed policies can no longer be covered up and hidden from the people who are suffering. Now, all of a sudden, they're back-peddling and sounding a lot like the Republican leaders they bashed. There is no way anyone can lay this mess at the feet of Republicans. The cities hardest hit due to lack of responsible leadership haven't voted for Republicans for decades.
Excerpts from the article:
* Imagine telling someone in June 2020, amidst the gnashing of teeth that accompanied Sen. Tom Cotton’s call for the National Guard’s use then, that a little over three years later, Democrats would be pining for the same."
“I am tired of burying our children,” White told the press this week.
"We are too comfortable with the state of our city. We must take action to gain control and protect our residents.”
*This spring, even Al Sharpton — he of “No justice, no peace!” fame — ripped his fellow progressives for their reticence to take the crime epidemic seriously.
"Anybody that tells you they’re progressive but don’t care about dealing with violent crimes are not,” declared Sharpton.
“You’re labeled progressive, but your action is regressive.”
* Its NAACP chapter has minced no words in assigning blame for this sorry state of affairs.
Failed leadership, including the movement to defund the police, our District Attorney’s unwillingness to charge and prosecute people who murder and commit life-threatening serious crimes, and the proliferation of anti-police rhetoric have created a heyday for Oakland criminals,” asserted the progressive group in a letter.
*“People are moving out of Oakland in droves. They are afraid to venture out of their homes to go to work, shop, or dine.”

So every Democrat and the NAACP chapter quoted in the article are mistaken. Good to know @im2.

@im2 said: I've read this bullshit from right wingers so many times. You cite a few places, but red states, entire states, are the most dangerous to live in. You right wingers can't govern, but you can certainly point fingers at everyone else.
You seem to keep missing the point (intentionally?) that this article is entirely quotes of left wing Democrat politicians and activists admitting the progressive policies they established are at the root of the chaos and violence in the cities.
Can you name the right wing Republican elected officials in the "dangerous" red states who have called for defunding police and changing the designation of formerly felony offenses to misdemeanors (which just happens to conveniently lower the crime stats making it look like the crime rate is dropping.) Also, if living in a red state is so dangerous as you say @im2, why risk life and limb living there? Get to the nearest blue stronghold city where you can leave your house and car doors unlocked and little old ladies can safely walk home from the bank with their social security money in their purse.

Well I'm sure it will come as a huge relief to the residents and business owners in DC, Baltimore, NYC, Chicago, Detroit, San Francisco etc to know they are safe from Republicans, laws, prosecution for crimes committed and those buzz kill police. I'm going to take the bars off my house windows, dismantle my car alarm and let Mayor Adams know his concerns about rising crime and the mass exodus from NYC are based on unfounded rumors and a bunch of right wing propaganda. He can share the good news with the politicians and activists in this article. Whew, I know I'm going to sleep better at night.

@im2 , Even when progressives themselves finally are forced to admit publicly that their soft on crime policies have caused crime to spike and emboldened criminals, all you can do is redirect the conversation away from these inconvenient facts and instead criticize sources who report on these issues.
Who could have foreseen that allowing people to loot up to $900 a day without fear of being arrested would cause businesses to go under. Who could have predicted arresting someone for a crime and sending them right back out into the streets with no review of their record to assess risk of recidivism would put the public at risk? Who knew allowing drug markets and usage of drugs in sprawling homeless encampments would draw large numbers of people to areas where laws are no longer enforced? Who could have guessed parents would have a problem with taking their kids to school walking through human waste, used drug paraphernalia and public displays of lewdness would have caused people to flee their communities, that is if they have any possessions or even a car that somehow managed to not be robbed still available. And tying the hands of police so they are less likely to be available to protect people in need shouldnt have had any effect on public safety. Add to that millions of unvetted, homeless "migrants" to the mix and still, we can't acknowledge there is a problem.
So bottom line, we're only allowed to point fingers at George Bush and Donald Trump. Wow, I guess the conservative media made everything up. I'm glad I live in solid blue NYC/NYS, safest place in the nation.

Except this thread is progressives left wing talking points. I think you're in the wrong thread @im2. But I'm sure the babies being shot dead in their cribs from stray gang bullets, old people being killed for their social security money by thugs with rap sheets a mile long and burned out looted businesses leaving the communities they once served and taking the jobs they provided with them isn't a problem at all. You never acknowledge or address these problems @im2 so I must conclude you don't give a crap about anyone suffering from failed progressive leadership, only failed right wing policies. Fair and balanced isn't in your vocabulary, got it.

Red or blues city, crime is a problem. And most of the problems come from misguided state and federal policy. BS

I also hold Republicans responsible for their failures @im2. That's why I don't consider myself a Republican. I see both sides of the coin. You've never seen me blindly marching in lockstep with the right wing crowd. My only allegiance is to my Creator.
I have worked in New York City government for 40 years in one of the bluest cities in the nation. I know how the far left works. In the early years, the Dems I worked for were more centrist and, other than their promotion of high taxes, nepotism and wasteful programs, many seemed to work for the people they swore to serve. But over the years, and with the exposure of corruption in high places, they have moved farther left. Socialists like AOC and other NWO loving lefties in the Federal government have turned my city onto a dystopian nightmare. Now homeowners live behind bars and career criminals roam free committing more crimes hours after they are given a summons to appear in court for a crime they were just arrested for. Judges are no longer permitted to look at the arrestee's record to assess the risk of turning them loose. Stores lock up their goods so you have to get an employee with a key to hand you a container of ice cream or a deodorant stick. Our overcrowded shelters, hospitals and schools are past the breaking point as they absorb millions of border crashers. The subways are a nightmare and I won't step foot in Manhattan anymore. Tourism is down and even if they could get a hotel room, who would pay top dollar to stay in a virtual homeless shelter crawling with bed bugs and chaos?
Even our new Mayor is frustrated at the mess he inherited from the former Mayor and the progressive state legislators who wrecked whatever semblance of law and order we once had. When the Republicans are wrong, I will admit it and not reward them with my vote. But by the same token, when the Democrats are being smug and disingenuous pointing fingers at the right whenever their own failings are pointed out I speak out.
