Our chicken comes from the butcher and is not slimy. No need to wash.

Do you always wash your lettuce or produce? for the most part, YES. grapes (when prices aren't thru the roof, often end up in my cart. they're already pre-bagged. i would NEVER buy a bag of grapes without sampling... unwashed will have todo.

I had bought a package at 30% off in the "soon to expire" bin at the supermarket. This turned out to be a good idea if only to pull out a few remaining pin feathers that had been missed by the machines. But since my mission was to boil them and then strip them of the meat for soup, it was not at all necessary from a health point of view.

kerouac2, i always look for those "manager's special" deals! i do believe there really are not expiration dates on chicken... it's a sell by date. i don't think stores are allowed to have meat out after that date on packages. i don't know the particulars, but if you buy chicken on last sell by date, you should still have a few days as long as stored/refrigerated correctly. this is what i just found... Raw chicken is usually good for 1-2 days past its sell-by date when stored in the refrigerator. However, if you're not planning to cook the chicken within 1-2 days after the sell-by date, it's best to freeze it.

I often freeze such purchases since sometimes it is a "family pack" that I need to break down into smaller quantities.

Food controversy
Do you leave butter out in a dish at room temp or always in the refrigerator?

i don't get why the first question (about washing chicken) or this 2nd one (about butter storage) is a "controversy"?! i keep my butter on the counter in an old-fashioned, vintage, refrigerator dish... i.ebayimg.com/images/g/oSoAAOSw7lpjeVG3/s-l1600.jpgit'll hold 2 sticks. like a small loaf dish.

Butter is both left out in the butter dish, and kept in the fridge.

@fuzzems, what has your panties in a bunch? nobody has said anything to piss you off. good topic of interest. absolutely no reason for the thread to be locked.
