A song writer first put my lyrics to music in 1969. He having Canadian-American roots was a bit odd, since the song is purely American. I was sung in a first-person narrative relating the economic and social distress experienced by the protagonist, a poor white Southerner, during the last year of the American Civil War, when he was raiding southwest Virginia. I was later made famous when sang by an American icon in 1971. I reached #1 on the charts, but was only there for one week.
I show people in this music tribute, that you can't raise a Caine back up when he's in defeat. What's my name?

He was bigger than I thought. I had never heard of him, and he did sort of recently die.
