57% of Americans Fear Falling Victim to Online Scams A recent Gallup survey highlights a growing concern among Americans regarding scams, with 57 percent of the respondents fearing being tricked by internet scammers. The Hill reports that in a recent Gallup survey, a majority of Americans have expressed their fears about falling prey to online scams. The survey, released this week, found that 57 percent of respondents are either frequently or occasionally worried about being tricked by a scammer or providing access to a financial account. This anxiety only ranks behind the fear of identity theft, which concerns 72 percent of Americans. The survey was conducted in October and involved telephone interviews with 1,009 U.S. adults and has a margin of error of four percentage points. www.breitbart.com/tech/2023/11/23/survey-57-of-americans-fear-falling-victim-to-online-scams/

I think the elderly are often targeted. Gets very hard to know what something is legit or not since you aren't often dealing with a person, a local office, etc.

I think the elderly are often targeted. Gets very hard to know what something is legit or not since you aren't often dealing with a person, a local office, etc. When my father was alive someone tried to scam him and I think it was someone he knew. Right after his birthday he got a call from someone who said they were his grandson. My dad's hearing wasn't great, and the person said knew my nephew's name. He claimed to be in jail in Mexico and needed money wired to him. Thankfully my father didn't fall for it and hung up. I'm pretty sure someone went though the garbage and found a birthday card K had sent him.

I have heard of that scam before, Justbec. Someone pretending to be a grandchild of the elderly person, and trying to convince them to send money to get them out of jail. These scammers are disgusting. The banks really ought to do more if they see large amounts of money being moved from an elderly person's account.
