Has Tipping Gone Too Far?This week, writers across the spectrum expressed bearish sentiments toward the current state of North American tipping culture. Tipping Fatigue: An analysis from CBS News (Lean Left bias) attributed a slowdown in “service-sector workers in non-restaurant leisure and hospitality jobs” to “tipping fatigue,” which it says has been aggravated by inflation and slowing wage growth. The writer suggested that with the holiday season upon us, those feeling less able to tip non-hospitality workers should focus on those who went above and beyond the most. Cash Is King:An opinion piece for the Canadian publication The Globe and Mail (Center bias) suggested people carry cash with them to maintain more autonomy in tipping by being less subject to preset tipping amounts presented when paying by card. The writer said “the point of cash is not to duck tipping altogether,” but expressed fatigue at being told how much to tip without considering how good the service was. Passing The Burden: An opinion writer for Washington Times (Lean Right bias) said “Tipping in America is out of control,” citing a recent experience at Dunkin’ where the machine suggested they tip 15%-25% for purchasing a French cruller donut. The writer said service staff at restaurants are “of course, different” as they work hard to craft an experience for the patron, but argued businesses should pay workers higher wages instead of passing the burden on to customers. link

Something I’ve been experiencing is they do less than before and want more. They don’t even put on the fake smile when bringing the bill.

I don't really like to tip. I think Wait staff just ought to be paid a decent wage and not have to rely on tipping to make ends meet.
Having said that, I do tip, at least at restaurants. Seems it's expected. I don't like it when they hand me the machine and first thing they ask is 'what percentage tip?'. That's enough for me to say 'none'.

I don't mind restaurant tipping. It's customary and well established. I would be fine to keep that. It's the everything else tip me now too cultural explosion that is annoying. And what it does is it pits the employee against the customer when in reality the employer is using this as a way to pay poor wages. The employee needs to be mad at the company not some one being handed a bag of chips at a checkout who doesn't tip

Hmmm...I wonder if I should set up a virtual tip jar at work... You might get tips. I'm asked on a ton of websites that provide services to tip. LOL

I don't believe it's my obligation to pay for the staff of any business, outside of purchasing the product. Wait staff needs to be paid a fair wage, period. Therefore, any tip would be for exceptional service. BTW exceptional service is not refilling or hounding me every time I take a sip of coffee.

I’ve never understood the tip jar by the cashier at places that don’t have waiters/waitresses.

I ordered something online the other day and at the check out it asked me if I wanted to tip the people packing and shipping what I bought. Um.. isn't that what they were hired to do???

I think one should tip at restaurants. I would be good if the tipping culture changed but for now, if going out to eat, I always figure that in as part of it.
