My recipe for dog food (when I had dogs) was basically ground turkey, sweet potatoes and broccoli all boiled and mashed up together. They loved it!

After reading some of the ingredients some commercial dog food companies put into the food (tumors for example) you're probably better off making your own. It is important, however, to know how to give your pet a balanced, healthful diet at every stage of their life. Also know which "people food" ingredients are toxic to dogs.

I research every item I put in their food. I know bacon and cheese are not the healthiest but I only use enough to give it some flavor. I have the toxic food list memorized.

So I vary it a little each time I cook. Depending on what I have on hand.
But basically this is it:
Ground chicken, or ground turkey or ground beef.(not all at once though). I will also use non-ground meats, like pork, but take off the fat first.
A little bit of liver or kidney or similar meat.
veggies, usually sweet potatoes or pumpkins, carrots, peas (or some other kind of greens),
I add a spoonful of white rice and a spoonful of oats, this to bind it all together.
Eggs (crush the shell and put in also for calcium).
Plus doggy vitamins and fish oils especially made for dogs.
I don't add any salt or favoring to mine.
I know a lot of people put in baking tray and cook in oven. I usually cook everything in a large pot on top of the stove and stew it to a thick consistency. Then I cool it and bag it up in smaller freezer bags, I make enough to last about a week or so.
My dogs love it. They have it for breakfast every morning. Rest of the time they have a good quality kibble. They also get raw bones with marrow (to help clean teeth), as well as a dental chew every morning. They also get a few treats, like training treats and such sometimes.

Once a week or so, my son brings home some of the pet food the meat market sells. It is made up of ground and chopped bits and pieces of the leftover scraps from cutting the meat. Kuma devours it. He also brings home a tomahawk bone for her every so often. She gnaws on it for a while, then buries it outside.

I really like doing it that way, as they get more liquid with the food. I thought well, the kibble is dry so lets try and make breakfast more moist at least. My dogs are little, so that bit of adjustment makes a bit difference. I vary the veggies, depending on what I have at the moment. I do have a lot of frozen pumpkin that I cut up from fresh, into small pieces and bagged up. So that makes it a bit easier. I don't use tinned anything. Everything has to be cut into small pieces to help it cook quickly and make it easier for them to eat. What you make sounds pretty good to me, Justbec. If I had bigger dogs, I would probably be doing it in a similar way.

I use what I have too and if out of fresh veggies I'll add frozen but now I'm focusing on fresh and changing it up.

I have found that since they get home cooked food, even just for breakfast, they have more energy, shiner coats and just overall are more healthy.

Ours still sits by Joe and I and hopes for scraps. She gets a lot of pizza crusts, fatty meats and the occasional fruit or veggies.
