This video is about a branch of the Cherokee that own their own land and 'reservation' and it is beautiful.

I was wondering how Native you have to be in order to get the Status in the US?
I think here in Canada you have to be at least one eighth Native and belong to a tribe.

In the video he said something about more that 1/16th for the Cherokee. But the real interesting part is 100 year ago a white man bought 56,000 acres for them and gave the land to them in deeds. They own the land and have a Casino that gives each tribal member money every 6 months. They built their own hospitals, maintain the roads, lawns... it is so vastly different than most Reservations Peter visits.

It does look nice and obviously well thought out and planned. So good for them.
I have to say that the reservation we have in town has quite a bad reputation. In that there are police there all the time. I mean they are stationed there, or at least one car is at all times. Just a few weeks back there was some sort of standoff whereon guns were involved.

Yes that is the situation with most reservations here.. poverty, drugs, alcohol and violence. I enjoy his videos because he is very respectful of them.

It's pretty much the same across Canada. Has to do with their upbringing which the the Government of Canada totally screwed up when they created the residential schools.

There are some very wealthy reserves in BC.

Oh yes, there is generational trauma there for sure. I have seen some of those documentaries about the residential schools, just awful and heart-breaking.

There are some very wealthy reserves in BC. A lot of it is Casino money. But I'm sure not all though. Which brings into the question is it morally right to make money from gambling? I mean seeing as it is those kind of vices that are already bringing down and keeping down many of the Reservations? And who exactly is profiting from all the money made from casinos? How much of it really trickles down to the everyday Native person to improve their lives and how much of it is just kept by the bigwigs who run the establishments?

Casinos are all over and if they can help the Native Americans they I say go for it. To see how the Cherokee turned their land and money into a beautiful community was so refreshing. All reservation could do that and would if they were not forced to live under government rules. One thing that was surprising was their hospital. It was huge, brand new and beautiful but almost empty. The guide said they out sourced their patients because they couldn't get doctors to work there.

Their leaders, the same as anywhere else in the world. In 2014 this chief paid himself $914,000. At the time there were 81 registered members and only 35 lived on the reserve. There are a lot of instances of this over the years. link
