Police 'overwhelmed' by increase in domestic abuse cases


Police in England and Wales are on the verge of being "overwhelmed" by "staggering" increases in reports of domestic abuse, inspectors say.

Recorded cases rose 31% between 2013 and 2015, Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) said.

It said this had led to "excessive" workloads and affected the quality and speed of investigations in some forces.

Meanwhile, a separate HMIC report found 31 out of 43 forces must improve their protection of vulnerable people.

HM Inspector of Constabulary Zoe Billingham's report is a follow-up to one published by HMIC in March 2014, which highlighted "significant weaknesses" in the service police gave domestic abuse victims.

The new report notes improvements since then, including a 31% increase in "domestic abuse related crimes" recorded by police - from 269,700 in the year to August 2013, to 353,100 in the year to March 2015.

Explaining why this is an improvement, the report says the rise could be partly due to better recording by police and forces "actively encouraging" victims to come forward.

Why would it be on the increase and what should be done about it?

I think it is both an increase in the phenomenon of domestic violence and an increased willingness to report it.

The burdens placed on people - particularly young people - in our society are so demanding that self-control is diminishing and lashing out - especially with the additional increase in drunkenness and harder drugs - is becoming more common.

At the same time - not entirely for praiseworthy reasons - there is a greater willingness to report DV incidents than there once was.

It's probably more acceptable than ever to come forward in these DV cases. I'm quite shocked really to read that there are so many of them.

Every woman (or man) who stays with an abuser for too long always gets asked the same question "Why didn't you just leave him/her". It's a very good question and the answers always seem a bit too insignificant to us looking on."Because I love him" seems to be at the top of that list."Because otherwise he is good father/provider/person". I'm sure a woman (or a man come to that) can come up with many reasons to stay in an unhealthy and dysfunctional relationship, and some stay too long and end up severely injured or worse, dead.

It's a good thing that more women are coming forward now. Obviously that will drive the recorded numbers up however. What I am wondering at is the big increase in just two years? I find that baffling.

Is society losing it? By that I mean, are we all just giving up and becoming just a caricature of what was once good and noble about the human race? Or are we just more aware of what is happening in the world and around us than we used to be? Do we now live in more stressful times than ever before and does that influence how people treat each other? Even those that they are close to?

It is sickening, it is happening all over the world, the people that do this should be locked up for life, they are a danger to others
