Strange how we all survive without them. The ordinary 'copper' carries only a truncheon and can only use it in self-defence.

Shotguns are legal in France if you have a hunting permit. The regulations are strict. The gun must be 'broken' and unloaded in a public thoroughfare. It is illegal to shoot over or in the direction of a thoroughfare or dwelling and the season is strictly regulated.

It's scary how many people carry/own guns.

A agree. Guns should be banned for everyone, expect Military, and they should use only as a last resort.

Use them as a last resort? Well that makes sense. What they supposed to say to the attacking enemy?"I'll put mine down, if you put yours down"?

The soldiers don't have much say in those though. The politicians should have done that beforehand.

Modern soldiers are almost all volunteers who choose this as a career. They go where they are told to go. I would imagine that most of today's American soldiers joined after the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. Negotiation is the leader's responsibility.

Here in Canada, around this area anyway, everyone seems to have a rifle. Used for hunting purposes. We hardly ever hear of anyone being shot or accidents, which is good. Anyone who wants a license to hunt (and so use a rifle), has to go through training in order to do so. They do start young though, 14 years old or so.
