I agree it is a risk. Whether you are stopping to help someone broken down on the side of the road, or jumping into water to keep a child from drowning. At times you have time to evaluate the risk, other times it's more instinctive. You do or you don't. Maybe most us don't really know how we would react in any given emergency situation, until it happens?

There have been helpers that have been sued for cracking ribs during CPR, which is pretty hard not to do if you are doing CPR correctly. One male helper was used by an elderly female who claimed he violated her modesty when he opened her blouse to use the AED that saved her life. She won. That is why the Good Samaritan laws exist.

Yes students should dissect. Knowledge of biological systems.
Yes for zoos. While I do think it is stressful for captive animals like bears and lions especially, i think seeing the animals and learning about them helps people to consider and care about them. So it's an overall good. But, I do think zoos should have certain requirements to have animals in terms of their space, food, captivity, etc. Not living in a cage.
Research. We do need animal research. However, there should be consideration to the pain and suffering of these animals.

Debate Question(s) of the Day:(Animal Edition) Should students dissect animals in science classes? Are zoos ethical? Should animals be used for research? Dissecting animals - I did it, I don't really see the value in it. For the most part kids were grossed out. Zoos - Not a huge fan but they do serve a purpose. The help endangered animals survive and bring awareness. Are they ethical, who knows. Animals for research - No, it's just cruel.

Debate Question(s) of the Day:(Animal Edition) Should students dissect animals in science classes? Are zoos ethical? Should animals be used for research? No, students shouldn't be allowed to dissect animals. I did science at school and when it came to that part, I refused to participate. And no one learned anything from it anyway. Apart from how little an animal life means. No, don't like zoos either. Unless they are there to protect the animal and the animal has lots of space to run and live. No, animals should not be used for research. In fact if I could, I would shut down every single animal research laboratory in the world. It's very very cruel and inhumane what is done to these poor souls. It just makes me angry and sick thinking about it. So it's a no and no and no.

Debate Question(s) of the Day:(Animal Edition) Should students dissect animals in science classes? Are zoos ethical? Should animals be used for research? I have no issue with dissection, and truly enjoyed it in school. In one of my classes I taught, we dissected sheep eyes and buffalo hearts. Plus, an autopsy is dissection of a human being, and that can yield a plethora of information. I think many zoos are ethical in that they attempt to preserve species and many give them natural but safe habitats to live in. Of course, there are those that don't care about anything but profit, and they should be shut down. Animal testing is an interesting question. I can see benefits for some things, but not for most. It has also been practiced for a very long time over hundreds of years. Anyone remember the rabbit test to confirm pregnancy? The Covid vaccine didn't go through any animal testing and went straight to humans. And now people are seeing what happens when steps are skipped.

Debate Question of the Day: Do standardized tests improve education? Or what should be the place and use for standardized testing? I am not a fan of standardized testing. I think it limits learning, because someone thought it was a good idea to tie funding to test scores. That narrows the curriculum to "teaching to the test", and eliminates the things that make for well rounded and adjusted students, such as art, music, physical education, shop, home ec. Education is more than regurgitating dates and names. It is learning critical thinking skills and how to correlate all of your experiences into formulating ideas. You know, now that I think of it, I wonder if there is a correlation between "teaching to the test" and the mental health of students? When I was in school, we had standardized tests called Iowa tests. They were either every year or every other year in elementary school. They were a big deal, but not the only deal. I still had a full curriculum with all of the soft subjects. Didn't really hear about school shootings back when kids had choices.

Debate Question of the Day: Should pets/animals be allowed more in public spaces? Yes if they have responsible owners that make sure they don't bother people AND they clean up after them.

I do think people could perhaps be more open to having pets or animals around. But yes, they would have to be managed. I do think there are a lot of places that could be made nicer with animals. I know they have some pet therapy but I do think like nursing homes and such have more dogs or cats brought in from time to time would be a good thing. But, one has to balance the risks of a pet, scratch, people with allergies, etc. But, I do think most people there could be a nice pet interaction per se.

In outdoor spaces, yes. In supermarkets, restaurants, places like Walmart and Home Depot, no.
Service animals excepted, of course.

Debate Question of the Day: Should pets/animals be allowed more in public spaces? Only if they are not out of control, which is most.... It's interesting that I have seen much better behaved dogs in public in the UK than I have here in Canada or the US. That is, I think, all to do with socializing the dog. When I was a kid, I even knew of one huge dog who used to take itself for a walk around the block and then back home again. Britain is known to be a nation of animal lovers. And cats and dogs live in close proximity to humans. And they get socialized very young,

Not sure if they will disappear, but I am rather certain that they will be forced to morph into something resembling a library, but much, much different.
