Is anyone following it this year? It looks like Russia is pulling out of the contest this year. Eurovision Song Contest: Russia pulls out over Ukraine banRussian broadcaster Channel One will not broadcast the Eurovision Song Contest next month because the country's competitor has been barred from host country Ukraine. Russia's decision removes any chance of it competing this year, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) said. Ukraine is refusing to allow Julia Samoilova to perform at Eurovision because she has visited Crimea, the peninsula seized by Russia in 2014. The EBU has condemned the ban. It says Ukraine is undermining the non-political nature of the contest. The union, which produces Eurovision, said it had offered two possible solutions to Channel One. The proposals were for Ms Samoilova to perform via satellite from Russia or for another contestant to be allowed to travel to Ukraine to take her place. Both were rejected and the broadcaster has now announced it will not televise the event. "Unfortunately this means Russia will no longer be able to take part in this year's competition," the EBU said."We very much wanted all 43 countries to be able to participate and did all we could to achieve this." Eurovision: X Factor singer Lucie Jones to represent UK Former X Factor contestant Lucie Jones has been named as this year's Eurovision song contest entry. Jones will sing Never Give Up On You when she represents the UK at the competition in Kiev, Ukraine in May. The song was co-written by Emmelie de Forest, the Danish singer-songwriter who won the song contest in 2013. Jones won a live voting programme on BBC Two on Friday night, where she competed against five other former X Factor contestants. Jones, who came eighth on X Factor in 2009, was in tears as host Mel Giedroyc revealed the result. "I can't believe you picked me - thank you so much", she said. Lucie Jones came eighth in X Factor in 2009 link

MInd you I don't think Russia is in Europe, mind you neither were Australia or Israel.
Italy is strong favourite apparently at about evens.
Dunno if it is that great on first hearing, I'm not too keen on it really, maybe it grows on you though, don't thin I could put money on it at that price!
UK and Ireland about 50-1

50-1? Are those good odds? 89 I can see more bets being placed soon then Can you put 10p on for me for the British one? I might actually win for once Yeah, that is true, how on earth did Russia and Australia get places in the Eurovision contest in the first place? And if them, than why not Canada?

Sure I put 10p on for you. I could only get 33-1 now though. I also put 10p on Belguim at 16-1, I did so because after I'd listened to a few a tune came into my head later on and it turned out to the the Belgium one. However. not all song are as instant as others so if I'd listen a bit longer I might have perfered something different. I have a look at the songs in order of view count on youtube, Italy is the higest at about 6 million beligum had about 2.5 million but I got 16-1 on it which I think is better value than Italy at evens. UK is about 800,000. Ireland is 560,000, it is 25-1 on one site and 50-1 on the other! They have to get through the semi final though on the 9th and 11th May, England and Italy automatically are in the final though, they automatically qualify along with france germany and spain. They do have non european countries in it sometimes, it is very popular in Australia so I think that is why they were allowed in last year. I suppose they could expand it more but then you would have to have more qualifying rounds. I suppose they could do a world version too?

Sure I put 10p on for you. Thank you! I'll have to have a more through look at the entries this year. It's a popular contest. It's a shame that Politics seem to infiltrate just about every aspect of life, including this song contest... Music should be something that brings people together. Yeah, why not a World Song Contest?

Yeah, why not a World Song Contest? Speaking of politics, I doubt the UK withdrawing from Europe will win them many votes, but you never know, other countries are not that keen on the EU either so it may not make much difference. Australia is in it again this year! Dunno if it is gonna win though, but it is about 14-1 sixth favourite so should have a chance.

That Italian entry is not too bad actually... Seems pretty popular, this version has 93 million views!! Going by that it should win! I think the girl sining the UK one was in Xfactor in 2009 and finished 8th.

It will be interesting to see just how much politics plays a part in this year's contest. Wow 93 million views for the Italian entry already. Maybe I should have put 10p on that one instead! The Australian entry is a bit depressing must say.

Lol, there seem to be quite a lot of depressing song in Eurvision some of the later irish winners were pretty gloomy Europe seems to like gloom, although disco types are quite popular too, so it is either gloom or disco! I don't know why the Italian one has so many views,it was not from the standard eurovision channel maybe it has already been a hit in Italy? Apparently it is #1 on itunes in Italy. So look like that will be hard to beat, I've prefer it not to be so predictable really, part of the fun is not know what will win. The italian one sounds better having heard it more but I am not as keen on it as the majority seem to be, not keen on the Aussie one either really.

I see that the contest is divided up into three parts now.
May 9th.
Semifinal on May 11th
and final on May 13th.
How come they don't do it all on one day anymore? Is it because there are too many countries involved now?
It's designed more like the X-Factor now...

RECAP: All the songs of the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest

Is it because there are too many countries involved now? It's designed more like the X-Factor now... Too many songs I think. 42 countries. If you had just 5 mins per song that would be 210 minutes, ie 3 and half hours and then you have the voting, if they just had 1 minute per country that takes you over 4 hours. There are 26 songs in the final but all 42 countries still vote. They have changed the format of the voting, they used to give the point individually for every point awarded before but now just give their highest point and do the lower point all in one go so to speak. So it has got a bit unwieldly, in the 20's it was 20 countries, indeed it started out with just 7. So you can see how expanding it further gets problematic. I don't find the voting as enjoyable as it used to be because it is done too fast and you can barely take it all in, the whole thing seemed a lot more relaxed in the past, now they have too much to get through in the allocated time. I think the running time is 3 hours 50mins, which is a long time, it was 4 hours in 2015 apparently! They had to trim the voting as the time increase accord to the square of the number entrants really ie 20x20=400 42x42= 1764 (although it would be 42 x 26 in reality as only 26 make the final). So doubling the number of countries makes the voting take 4 times as long

Yep, it would seem so. I still remember the wit of Terry Wogan. He was a lot of fun to watch. Not sure if I like this extending it to a three day event, but how else can they do it?
We won't get the show here in May of course. I am hoping to see bits of the highlights on Youtube.
I find it hard to sit through these kind of shows if they are more than an hour or so long. Even the Oscars get tedious if they just carry on and on.

Yes Terry Wogan is missed I think, I think it probably does have more countries than it can handle now you can only concentrate on one thing for so long, I'll have it on the the background whilst doing other stuff. It is hard to concentrate on anything for much more then an hour, eventually it kind of blends into the background!

Yeah it does.
I can't believe that Terry Wogan is gone. He was the kind of person that you would imagine would surely live forever.

Yes that was a bit of a surprise he certainly seemed to have been around forever and seemed to go quite suddenly, I guess nobody does go on forever no matter who they are, but he was kind of like a permanent fixture in many people's lives.
